If you like Tortoises, then you've come to the right site. I have a Red-Foot and she is very active, unlike most tortoises. In my opinion, tortoises are the best pets ever! They don't shed, they don't hibernate, they don't make loud noises (not unless they have a reason, so don't abuse them!!), and they don't bite.
Some people have trouble telling which is male and which is female (I know, I was one of them.) The easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom of the shell. If it was flat the tortoise wouldn't be able to breathe. It is actually round ,going inward, near the stomach. If the roundness isn't very prominent, it's a female (which mine is.) If you can see the roundness easily, it's a male.
What they eat is mostly fruits and vegetables. Some good ones are:
Yes, hard to believe it is, they do make a noise. The tortoise will probably never do this, but they make a clucking noise. I do not lie to you. If you believe me, that's great! If you don't, then find out for yourself.
They can live to be from 80 to 100 years if it is
in good health. So far, mine is only 2 so I don't know
how long she'll live. You should just try to raise it as
good as you can.
They can live to be the size of a dinner plate or
bigger. But again you must feed it right and raise it as
good as you can.
The best thing for it to live in would be something large and shallow. For example, a kiddie pool, a cement mixing pan, or even your own bathtub! Anything large and shallow. They do NOT live in water, tortoises are land creatures. However, they like to sit in something like a pie pan full of water. The bottom should be covered in mulch and/or some large, flat stones. They like to have a hiding place like a planting pot turned on end to give a cave effect. They like to be kept very warm like 75 to 80 degrees F. In its cage, you could have something like a heating light to shine down into it.
